Originally from the horn of Africa, Selam is a long time Denverite who has lived and worked in the Denver area for over 20-years. She earned her Master’s Degree in Social Work in 2004. Over the last 13 years, Selam has worked with families from many different backgrounds, from Boys Town in Washington DC, as a Social Worker for at risk youth; to Denver Human Services, assisting individuals with disabilities to obtain benefits; to being a Supervisor of a Denver based Supportive Living agency, coordinating and supervising services provided to individuals with developmental disabilities. Selam loves the direct, unfilterd communication styles of the clients she works with, and finds great joy and much laughter in her work. For the past five years, Selam has worked specifically as a Life Skills Coach empowering individuals in reaching their goals of independent living.
In her work with clients and their families, Selam uses the Strength Based Model. Strength Based perspective is a Social Work term that emphasizes individuals strength, rather than their deficits. In this model, the Life Skills Coach works in partnership with the client and their families in creating and implementing a service plan. The Life Skills Coach supports the client in becoming self-determining and independent through problem solving, questioning, and reflective listening to enhanced self-awareness. Through repetitive instructions, clients are eventually able to make their own decision and informed choice.

Selam also works with her clients one-on-one to help them learn daily life skills. She uses visual cues such as the pictures depicted on the left of this screen to help clients learn new task. A picture is worth a thousand words, particularly for individuals with learning challenges, who are often also visual learners. In the pictures to the left, Selam coached the client how to clean their living area, and then created a binder with the before and after pictures and instructions, so the individual can refer to the binder when they need to clean their apartment on their own. Other teaching methods include modeling, video recording, role playing and other creative tools to increase clients independent living skills.
